Info: Commonly known as aniseed, anise is a sweet and aromatic spice. Anise comes from the parsley family with a history that dates back to 1500 B.C. The Romans ate anise cakes at the end of elaborate feasts to help aid digestion. King Edward I taxed anise seed to pay for the London Bridge.

The seeds, whole or ground, are used in many ethnic and regional confectioneries such as black jellybeans and British aniseed balls, and Australian humbugs. Anise is heavily used in Mediterranean breads, cakes, cookies, and liquors. Anise seed is a common ingredient in Middle Eastern and Indian soups and stews.
