The next DIY food gift idea is super easy and customizable: flavored salts!

Flavored salts are popular gifts because they feel fancy but are very versatile to use - it can be used as a garnish for a homemade snack, mixed in to a dry rub, or as rimming salt for fancy cocktails (cricket-salt-rimmed cocktail, anyone?). With salts, the possibilities are endless.

The general rule of thumb is 1 teaspoon of flavoring to ¼ cup of salt. Use large-grained, flakey salts. Kosher salt is a good place to start, but if you want to jazz it up a bit, use Maldon Sea Salt.

As for flavorings, go crazy! Citrus, herbs, spices, tea, flowers - anything will work so long as the ingredients are dry.  Here are some ideas for starters:

  • Matcha Salt is a traditional condiment for tempura.
  • Chili salt on fresh fruit is a popular Mexican street food.
  • Curry salt can make your old microwave popcorn exciting again! (Make sure to use unsalted popcorn!)
  • Lemon and black pepper salt is a great salt rub for pork roasts.
