What is organic?

Spicely spices are 100% certified organic. So what does that mean? It means our ingredients are:

  • Free of poisonous pesticides and any associated health problems
  • Free of artificial fertilizers changing how they grow
  • Free of GMO's. Nature uses genes to make differences between all plants and animals. Recently, in GMO's people have been experimenting with forcing combinations of genes from different living things into a single organism. Not in our food, thanks.

reds4Why organic?
Since the beginning of time all living things have been connected in a balanced and interconnected web of life. We make changes in the physical world, just by being alive. These changes are used by other life to survive, and so the cycle continues all over the world. For example, you breathe to live. What you breathe out (carbon dioxide) is used by trees to grow. The trees help other living things and so on and so on. When one changes, all are changed. The connections we have been able to understand are complicated enough to inspire awe and wonder at their ancient complexity and beauty. It's a safe bet that most of them, and their effects on us, will stay a complete mystery for a long, long time, if not forever.

So how can we encourage food from the Earth without risking damaging the web of life that keeps all life in balance?

By growing our food in ways that have already been proven over thousands of years. By using methods as close to Nature's own as possible. By measuring success by the abundance of life itself, beyond the amount of product produced in the fewest possible units of time for the smallest amount of money.

reds3This is what traditional organic farmers have always worked hard to do. By avoiding synthetic pesticides that didn't exist when our parents were born, they keep healthy soil alive and well with vital microorganisms. By avoiding synthetic fertilizers we keep rivers clear of unnatural levels of algae (which, in turn, keeps fish populations healthy). By avoiding GMO's we keep the ancient genetic foundations of life itself strong. By encouraging a healthy balance of different plants and animals, organic farmers produce more vibrant food, by encouraging actual life. All of this adds up to you and your family getting the food our bodies have expected since the beginning of time. The food that is part of, and nurtures, the very web of life itself.
