Organic Oregano

Regular price

Our Organic Oregano is popular in Italian and American cuisines. Oregano, in the same family of marjoram, has a similar appearance and flavor with hints of pepper, mint, and fennel. The distinct flavor enhances meats, spicy foods, pizza sauce, pasta dishes, and salads.

Using at Home

Our all-natural oregano lends itself beautifully to sauces, especially pizza sauce, and adds lots of flavor to the dishes.

Use 1 tablespoon oregano per 4 cups liquid for sauces and soups.

Oregano goes well with most meats.

It compliments mushrooms and onions and is delicious sautéed with those vegetables.

With delicate flavors it should be used sparingly as it can quickly overpower.

It can be substituted for marjoram, although you should use less due to its strong flavor.

Health

Its essential oil is used to treat a number of skin issues such as dandruff and acne.

It contains compounds that work as antimicrobial agents and may even be useful in fighting the superbug MRSA.

Oregano also shows promise as an anti-inflammatory, with benefits for conditions such as osteoporosis.

Biologists have found that compounds in oregano may help with the prevention and progression of cancer.

For nutrition, oregano contains fiber, iron, manganese, vitamin E, calcium, and more.

History

Over the centuries it has been used for a wide variety of ailments, including toothache, coughs, asthma, and strewn on the ground to ward off snakes.

Oregano has been used since the time of ancient Greece for medicine, where it was believed to be an effective antidote for poison.

In ancient China it was also widely used for its medicinal benefits.

It was believed that growing oregano around your home, or carrying it as a charm, would protect against evil energy and spells.

Today, many of these traditional beliefs have faded, but the herb has become more popular than ever thanks to its globally adored culinary usage.
