Our Organic Ajwain seeds, often called Bishop weed, is the annual herb from a plant belonging to the same family as celery, carrot and parsley. The seeds are pale brown in color and oval shaped resembling caraway and cumin seeds. Our all-natural ajwain has a pungent somewhat bitter taste comparable to anise and oregano. These flavorful seeds smell like thyme because thymol is present in the herb, but the taste is more subtle and aromatic. Care is advised when using ajwain seeds, a little is enough to overpower a dish, but a little goes a long way, making ajwain a great addition to your spice cabinet.

It is commonly believed that ajwain seeds grow in the wild in ancient Egypt from where it spread to Arabia, India and parts of Asia. Initially better known for medical application, ajwain later found a spot in the Indian cuisine. Ajwain seed is not commonly used in western cuisines except that it sometimes is used as an substitute for caraway or fenugreek. Cuisines with roots in India or selected parts of Asia have long used ajwain seeds in a range dishes‰ÛÓa tradition that continues today.

High levels of thymol, about 50% of oil pressed from the seeds contain thymol which has many potential health benefits. The seeds are also chewed upon raw to ease the discomfort of an upset stomach, boiled in some water the derived drink is also said to give instant relief from indigestion. The thymol present in the seeds has anti-spasmodic properties which may help relieve persistent cramps as well. These seeds are also believed to be beneficial for relief of asthma, arthritis and rheumatic pains.
