Organic Juniper Berries
Our Dried Juniper Berries are small seed cones of various varieties of junipers, which are similar to a small fruit like berry. In Scandinavian cuisine juniper berries are used to impart a sharp and clear flavor to dishes, in other parts of the world juniper berries are described as having a green fresh flavor with a citrus note. Our all-natural dried juniper berries are suitable for both, and are a beautifully unique way to add delicious flavors and aromas to all your favorite winter and fall dishes.
Juniper Berries have through history been associated with warding off evil, a juniper tree planted in front of your house will stop a witch from entering the premises. The Scottish used juniper incence to ward off the evil eye and in Tibet to ward of demons. It all started, however, with juniper berries being the symbol of the Canaanites fertility goddess Ashera. The Greeks also used them to increase their physical stamina during Olympic events and the Romans used them as an affordable substitute to the expensive black pepper. Since then, the berries have become popularized primarily for their unique culinary role, and have spread around the world, flavoring dishes of all kinds.
Juniper Berries have, like most of our herbs and spices, many health benefits. The bitterness in juniper berries is known to increase saliva production which in return increases stomach acid and digestive enzymes, thus improving digestion. According to research both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria that cause MRSA can be reduced by the compounds found in the berries. Juniper Berries also have high levels of antioxidant helpful to neutralize free radicals in the body.
