Our Organic White Sesame Seeds come from the flowering sesame plant, thought to have originated in sub-Saharan Africa, and are processed in our gluten-free facility. Due to its unique ability to grow in areas otherwise unsuitable for agriculture, today the sesame plant is cultivated throughout the world for it‰۪s edible seeds, known to be rich, nutty, and slightly sweet in flavor, which is of course heightened by toasting.

Though most varieties are wild and native to sub-Saharan Africa, due to the robustness of the crop, it has since been naturalized in tropical areas worldwide, and today is primarily grown in India. Sesame seeds are largely known for their extremely high oil content, and in fact are the oldest oilseed crop known to man, believed to have been domesticated over 5000 years ago. The common phrase ‰ÛÏopen sesame‰۝, known to be used for the first time in 1700s in Arabian Nights, as the magic words to open a sealed cave, is believed to be a reference to the sesame plant‰۪s seedpods that burst open upon reaching maturity.

Sesame seeds have a long rich history when it comes to their nutritional and medicinal properties. Approximately 3600 years ago, writing from the Ancient Egyptians lists the flavorful seed as a favored medicine, and the ancient Babylonians are believed to have used sesame seeds to promote youth and beauty. Today, sesame seeds are known to be an excellent source of zinc, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, copper, iron, vitamin B1, and dietary fiber, and are known to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Using at Home
Our natural sesame seeds can be used in any number of dishes from cuisines across the world. One option would be to make your own tahini, or sesame seed paste, a staple in traditional hummus, simply by toasting and then processing the seeds into a paste. Another popular use for sesame seeds is to use them in a stir-fry to add some texture to the dish. Though there are plenty of traditional uses, feel free to think outside the box! Spice up a plain old salad, add a new dimension to your next homemade pizza, or even use as a nice textured topper to your next dessert! When it comes to the rich, nutty, and versatile flavor of sesame seeds, your options are truly endless.
