History
Dill seed actually isn't a seed, but the oval dark brown fruit of the herb that was planted by the Vikings as a remedy for colic in babies. Dill grows very easily which suited the Viking style of life and the plant spread quickly over large parts of Europe.
The more civilized parts of the European population found culinary use for the herb. The dill weed was used to flavor pickled vegetables and to cure fish while the seeds were used for hearty autumn dishes.
When fall arrives dill seeds appear; after the flat umbrella shaped flowers of the dill plant give way to the seeds.
