Our Organic Black Sesame Seeds come from the flowering sesame plant, thought to have originated in sub-Saharan Africa, and have since become cultivated across the globe for their desirable edible seed. Very similar to the white sesame seeds, that are often seen sprinkled over the top of baked goods, this black variation boasts a slightly more powerful nutty flavor-profile, which is generally enhanced via toasting.

Though most varieties are wild and native to sub-Saharan Africa, due to the robustness of the crop, it has since been naturalized in tropical areas worldwide, and today is primarily grown in India. Sesame seeds are largely known for their extremely high oil content, and in fact are the oldest oil-seed crop known to man, believed to have been domesticated over 5000 years ago. The common phrase open sesame known to be used for the first time in 1700s in Arabian Nights, as the magic words to open a sealed cave, is believed to be a reference to the sesame plant's seedpods that burst open upon reaching maturity.

Sesame seeds have a long rich history when it comes to their nutritional and medicinal properties. Approximately 3600 years ago, writing from the Ancient Egyptians lists the flavorful seed as a favored medicine, and the ancient Babylonians are believed to have used sesame seeds to promote youth and beauty. Today, sesame seeds are known to be an excellent source of zinc, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, copper, iron, vitamin B1, and dietary fiber, and are known to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Using at Home
Our all-natural black sesame seeds pack an irresistibly nutty flavor profile that has been used to boost both sweet and savory dishes in a massive range of different cuisines around the world. In your own kitchen, one option would be to make your own tahini, a sesame seed paste-like butter, which is a staple in traditional hummus. To do this, simply toast the seeds in a dry pan on the oven, don't let them smoke, and then process the seeds into a paste--keep grinding until it's smooth! Another delicious option is to use these seeds in your next stir-fry to add some texture. While there are countless traditional options, feel free to get creative! Add a twist to your next plain old salad, stack a new dimension on your next pizza, or incorporate into your next dessert or baked good to create a uniquely textured and delightfully nutty topper! Reality is, these rich, nutty, and versatile seeds, are globally loved for a reason, and for that reason, you really can't go wrong!
