Our Organic Celery Seeds are a tiny spice that imparts big flavor into many dishes. These little seeds pack a large punch, so they only need to be used sparingly when cooking. Their flavor is just like celery; slightly sweet, slightly bitter and just a little grassy. The unique saltiness that the seeds add to dishes accentuates the natural flavors of nearly everything savory.

Celery and its seeds are believed to have originated near the Mediterranean, being cultivated for medicinal purposes as early as 850 BC. In ancient Greece, winners of the Nemean games (similar to the Olympic games) would wear celery leaves. The plant itself is well traveled, with wild relatives of celery being found all over the world. Celery, itself, is a widely used ingredient, adding flavor to the famous French mirepoix and as a base in many Cajun dishes.

Celery seeds got their start as medicine, being used to treat a wide variety of illnesses. Today, celery seed is used mainly as a diuretic, but it can also be used to treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol. There are promising studies showing that celery seeds and their oils can help protect the liver from high doses of drugs such as acetaminophen. Celery seeds are also believed to be effective in the treatment of arthritis and other inflammation, to reduce muscle spasms and calm the nerves.

Using at Home
Celery seeds can be used whole or ground, depending on your preference. Ground seeds do impart more flavor and some people have trouble digesting seeds, preferring to grind them before use. You can buy seeds and grind what you need for a recipe (if you desire), ensuring freshness and flavor. As a rule of thumb, you can use celery seeds anywhere you would use celery. Often the stringy texture of celery is undesirable, so celery seed would be a better ingredient, for example in a soup base. Celery seeds are also popular in brine for making pickles, as well as cold salads, such as coleslaw or potato salad.
